How to Choose Managed Funds

How to Choose a Fund

Once you have decided what rate of return is required to meet your investment objective there are a number of ways you can execute your decision. This can be done using a variety of diversified funds, sector specialist funds or direct investment - for example shares.

Diversified Funds

Diversified Funds spread the investments over a variety of asset sectors. They can take the work out of deciding which asset and how much to invest in, as the fund manager does it for you.

The table below shows a number of diversified portfolios ranging from Conservative, which tend to have a lower risk profile to High Growth, which have a greater allocation to higher risk assets such as Australian and international shares.

Diversified Funds
Portfolio name Cash Fixed Interest Australian Equity Property International Equity
Conservative 30% 50% 10% 2% 8%
Moderate 20% 40% 18% 8% 14%
Balanced 20% 20% 35% 10% 15%
Growth 5% 15% 40% 10% 30%
Aggressive 0% 0% 50% 10% 40%

Most fund managers name their diversified funds as they relate to specific risk profiles, i.e. Conservative, Balanced and Growth.
